Hiking in Sun Valley

hiking in Sun Valley, ID

Sun Valley during the summer is a haven for hikers looking for a lively trek through some of the most beautiful scenery Mother Nature has to offer. Sightseers and adventurers from all over the world come to witness the magnificence of Bald Mountain (or Baldy, as it’s affectionately called) and experience the rugged charm of Idaho’s untamed wilderness.

Bald Mountain is crisscrossed with nearly 28 miles of scenic and challenging trails, and the surrounding hillsides are home to many more hikes. Enlist the help of a knowledgeable guide, who can show you all the best trails, teach you some local history, and point out some of the fascinating flora and fauna.

Go at your own pace and soak in the vibrant sunshine of this mountain oasis as you travel through the wild growth and wooded hillsides. Grab your hiking boots; be sure to pack plenty of water and sunscreens, but first and foremost, don’t forget your camera.

Sun Valley Hiking and Biking Trails

Bald Mountain Trail

Travel down from the peak of Bald Mountain for a light five-mile trek. Or, make your way up the hillside for a more vigorous workout and ride the chairlift back down. This trail offers fantastic views of the surrounding landscape.

Broadway Trail

Considered by many to be one of the most scenic routes in Sun Valley, this trail begins near Lookout Restaurant and travels west to Seattle Ridge, or it can be travelled in the opposite direction. Broadway affords excellent views of the Smoky and Sawtooth Mountains.

Cold Springs Trail

Stretching across 2,500 vertical feet of the mountain’s south face, Cold Springs Trail works its way through meadows filled with wildflowers until is meanders down through the lush woods of Sun Valley. At its top, this trail affords stunning views of the Pioneer Mountains.

Warm Springs Trail

Warm Springs is an eight-mile trail that winds through the open meadows until it reaches Monarch Ridge. From this lofty vantage point you can see the entirety of Bassett Gulch. The next “must see” stop is Little America Point, which provides a full panorama of the surrounding valley.

Traverse Trail

Traverse Trail is a rollercoaster of rolling hills that takes travels from the lower section of River Run Trail and wanders up many switchbacks until it reaches the base of Flying Squirrel and onto the base of Warm Springs trail. Views of the wooded countryside on this trail are some of the best in the area.
